UPDATE: Home Opener to be played at Rentschler
A big announcement was made yesterday, in which the team announced that they will be having the home opener at Rentschler Field. Here's the official statement from the club:
This is an interesting development and although it's disappointing that we will have to wait to see Dillon Stadium in its full glory, I am excited by the opportunity to showcase CT's love for the beautiful game by packing Pratt & Whitney Stadium with soccer fans. Anyone who's every been to a USMNT or USWNT at Rentschler knows that it doubles as a great soccer stadium, which in my experience has always provided an electric environment. From hosting Landon Donovan's last game to the 2018 Tournament of Nations, Rentschler has been a consistent venue for the national teams over the last 10ish years.
From the press release by the team, it looks like that Dillon Stadium will open by mid-June, – for either the St. Louis FC (6/8) or Nashville SC (6/16) match – which means that the first 4-5 home games will be played at Rentschler. This isn't ideal but I like the idea put forth by the club of making Dillon "perfect" before we christen it as our Saturday sanctuary.
ONE FINAL NOTE: I do have to say thought that imaging a sell out of ~40k Athletic supporters packing Rentschler for the home opener gives me chills. (I mean if FC Cincinnati can do it, why not us...)
